Pavel Pepperstein was born in 1966. From 1985 to 1987, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Co-founder of the art-group Inspection Medical Hermeneutics, founder of the “psychedelic realism” movement, painter, art theorist, and writer. The Mythological Love of Castes novel written in collaboration with Sergei Anufriev was nominated for the 2006 Russian National Bestseller Award. In December 2014, Pepperstein was awarded the Kandinsky Prize for his project Sacred Politics. His works can be seen at the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), the Pompidou Centre (Paris), and in major private collections. In 2009, his project Victory Over the Future was presented at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009). Pepperstein also participated in the 26th São Paulo Biennale (Brazil, 2004) and the 1st Bergen Biennale (Norway, 2013).

Pavel Pepperstein’s piece for the 2016 Spring BoscoMagazine cover clearly displays the influence of suprematism and, in particular, the ideals of Malevich. Geometric shapes form a family – a metaphor standing in for Russian avant-garde. The big orange cat establishes a feeling of hospitality and coziness to this socio-cultural myth.

Pavel Pepperstein usually creates serialized artworks. After the group portrait A Suprematist Family the artist painted several double portraits: the mother and the father, the grandparents, the son and the daughter, and, naturally, the cat and the dog. All figures form the proud family of suprematist shapes. “Here we have the basic idea of an ideal family. Everyone can imagine one’s loved ones in the place of these geometrical shapes» – notes the artist. He imparts the warmth of traditional prints to these severe figures of Russian avant-garde.
