Georgy Totibadze (born in 1967) is a Georgian and Russian painter, graphic artist. In 1982 Georgy entered the Moscow Art School in Memory of 1905, and in 1986 – the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. Lived and worked in Paris in 1993-1994. In 1996 he created a series of paintings in Hong Kong, later they were bought by private Japanese collectors. From 1997 until 1998 he lived and worked in San Francisco. In 2017 Georgy Totibadze’s cycle Sheltered by the Woods was presented at the Moscow Biennale. Since 2007, the painter works at the Strelka Institute of Architecture and Design.

Perhaps, this road which actually exists outside Moscow gives a new family the chance to distance itself from the outside world. Or does it symbolize the grand yet not always smooth path that each family has to follow year-in, year-out? Totibadze’s unique style and philosophical outlook impart a feeling of inner drama to The Beginning.

Georgy Totibadze describes himself as a neo-primitivist, and, as he has achieved his formal education in Moscow and Tbilisi, this is an apt definition. His art appeals directly to our visual perception. The Out of the Woods triptych breaks away from reality and presents us with an idyllic landscape. Totibadze lavishes the same attention to the ever-present dirt of the roads of Stolbovka Village. This is a perfect contrast for the figures of the newlyweds – a hapless pair of lovers who have lost Paradise but remain steadfast in their hope for simple human joys...
